Yesterday my wife had a baby boy. I'm absolutely delighted!
Here's a pic of Dara looking adorable...

"The Award-Winning Malinky"

Sunday, December 05, 2010

Delighted to say that Malinky won the award for Best Trad Band at the Scottish Trad Music Awards last night (8 months after my retirement). Who knows how many awards we'd have had if I'd retired years ago?

Great stuff. Well done to Steve, Fi, Dave, and also Mike, Dan and Matheu for the last 12 months' work.

Deutschland (und Malinky) uber alles

Thursday, November 04, 2010

Due to a small domestic accident involving Dave Wood, I'll be part of Malinky for their upcoming German Tour - 17th til 28th November. Check out www.malinky.com for full details.

Solo Show, 1st October

Thursday, September 16, 2010

I'll be playing my first solo gig of the year as part of Trad at the Trian, Armagh, on Friday and Saturday 1st and 2nd October. Trad at the Trian is a monthly concert series held in the auditorium of St. Patrick’s Trian Heritage Centre (just behind the Tourist Information Centre).

8pm - Friday, October 1 2010

The concert normally features one singer and one instrumentalist, performing acoustically and usually unaccompanied. I'll be providing the songs and the instrumental side will be provided by Brona Graham, a banjo player and fellow native of County Antrim.

On the Saturday morning Brona and I will put on a song workshop and an instrumental class.

Good News

Monday, August 02, 2010

Nothing to do with music; Islay (my wife) and I had confirmation today that we are 14 weeks pregnant. We're expecting our first baby in February 2011!

Can't wait.

Fred Morrison Band

Sunday, May 30, 2010

My first post-Malinky gigs will be with Scottish piper extraordinare, Fred Morrison. Fred's a piper I've admired since we first performed on the same bill on the Scottish Folk Festival Tour in Germany in 2002. I'll be standing in on bodhran and percussive stuff for Martin O'Neill (the hardest working man in showbiz) with Fred and Matheu Watson - The Fred Morrison Band - at a piping event on Belfast on 31st July and at Jura Folk Festival on the weekend of 26th September. The latter date also happens to be my wedding anniversary. It's a good job I have an understanding wife!

That's about it for me...

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Tomorrow, 15th April, I will play my last gig with Malinky. I started the band with Karine, Steve, and Kit in September 1998, and it's been an amazing 12 years or so. All good things must come to an end. I just want to wish Steve, Fi, Dave, and Mike the best of luck with their future plans (whatever they may be).

To anyone reading this I'd say - keep giving them your support. If you want to hear more from me, I'll be maintaining my gruelling schedule of 2 solo gigs a year from now on...

15th April is also the 26th anniversary of the death of Tommy Cooper, a comic genius.

Whistle do nicely

Thursday, December 24, 2009

I recently bought a brilliant new whistle from a little-known maker, Deerness Whistles. Made of African Blackwood and silver, it has wonderful tone and terrific intonation. I hope to get it into a recording studio some time soon!

I'd recommend Deerness Whistles without hesitation (Kevin Crawford's already been raving about his!) and if you want to find out more, please drop me an email as the company has extremely limited internet presence.

I might put up pictures of it at some point, but whistles are to be listened to rather than observed...

High Praise from the High Priest!

Monday, May 25, 2009

Mike Harding has the only national radio folk music programme in the UK. Every folk performer wants to be played on his show as it means nationwide exposure and a chance to be heard by people who might not otherwise have heard of you. In short, Mike's show is a big deal.

Imagine my astonishment, then, when he described Islands on the Moon as "one of the best albums of the last 10 years" live on air. Flippin' Heck! My jaw's still sore from hitting the floor...

Out with the olds, in with the news

Friday, March 27, 2009

Since receiving adoring fan letters numbering nearly, oooh, one since Christmas, I thought I'd assemble some new news stories.

As a fan of Bob Dylan since the age of 17, I was quite chuffed to be referred to as "a fine Dylan on velvet" in the March edition of Dirty Linen. At least I assume they meant Bob Dylan, as opposed to the rabbit from The Magic Roundabout...

In other recent review news, the Dutch mag New Folk Sounds reckons "Dunlop heeft een fraaie, authentieke stem, geknipt voor deze ballades". Dunno what that all means, but it shure shounds impreshive!

Also got a thumbs-up in the March edition of fROOTS!
